20130821: Words first

One of the other moderators had an idea of preparing for Nanowrimo by coming up with the idea of a story by going through Holly’s workshops:

  1. Language — because it’s the soul of a people
  2. Culture — based on the language(s) created
  3. Character — from the culture(s) you created
  4. Plot — based on the conflicts between the characters

That seemed like fun.  So while I work on my revision, I’m also creating a couple of languages.  But.  While creating the languages, I’ve already come up with a whole world and story-line.  I’m still going to go through the workshops and flesh everything out but I’m pretty pleased with what I have so far.

And here is a rough picture of some of the characters:

That’s Jiax (the Hero) and Yu’ya (the girl he wants to impress) and his horse.  And a dragon.

And I might use…

That’s Toukala (Jiax’s impact character), and a minor character… and a baby dragon.

  1. Wow, all that from a language!
The baby dragon might be a little dark in the second picture, but then again, maybe he’s just hiding! He looks a bit like our cat does when she’s lurking under the bed … 😉

    He’s shy.

And it was a rough draft type of picture. 🙂

  3. Love Holly’s courses! When I went through the language course, I fitted the language to what I already knew of my people and story, but I like the idea of going the opposite way.

Yeah, I hadn’t thought of going from Language to Culture before. I have a tendency to go from Culture to Plot/Character. So this has been a nice exercise. I’m glad Danzier thought of it.
